Neuropsychological testing may be ordered to describe or predict cognitive impairment due to a wide variety of etiologies, and may be useful for diagnosis in some situations.
Cognitive impairment can occur secondary to genetic, chromosomal, or congenital disorders; acquired brain insults such as:
· traumatic brain injury
· anoxia
· neurotoxins or infections
· intracranial surgery or radiation
· stroke
and chronic or progressive conditions such as:
· uncontrolled epilepsy
· multiple sclerosis
· Parkinson disease
· cerebrovascular disease
· neurodegenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease
